Teddy Roosevelt Watching Lincoln's Funeral Procession

This photograph shows Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession passing through Manhattan on April 25, 1865. The house on the left is the home of Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt at the corner of Broadway and Union Square.

Zoom in on the window and you can see two figures watching the procession. They are future president Teddy Roosevelt, six years old, and his brother Elliott, four.

Of all the things to survive.
